Most foodies consider Paris a gourmet paradise. But not everyone who comes to Paris is a gourmand.
Jack Sock, the only American remaining in the French Open men’s draw after beating Borna Coric 6-2, 6-1, 6-4 on Saturday, subscribes to the latter category: Stick to the familiar – no surprises necessary when it comes to eating.
When asked how long he’d allow himself to enjoy reaching his first Grand Slam quarterfinal he responded with food as a comment: “Probably enjoying it through Chipotle dinner tonight and then I will start getting focused tomorrow night.”
Yup, that’s right. With all the restauarants and cafes in Paris, Sock, often in the company of his buddy Nick Kyrgios, are choosing the healthy-style Mexican American fare of Chipotle. They tend to frequent two of the fast serve locations – by the Champs Elysee or one in a mall.
So how often does Sock branch out for a little taste of French fare for let’s say variety sake?
“I haven’t had any French,” he admitted. “I have had Chipotle or room service or Indian food the night before I play. It’s one of those three.”
The next question was obvious: “You haven’t even had a croissant?” After all, who can resist a buttery, flaky croissant in Paris.
“Oh yeah,” he said. “Maybe at breakfast.”
Sock will likely need that spicy Indian food boost for a kick start in his fourth round match. That’s when he’ll take on Rafael Nadal, the guy who has won here nine of the last 10 years.
“Obviously as a tennis player, when you play Roger (Federer) at Wimbledon or playing Rafa (Nadal) here, there is a few of those matchups and scenarios where it’s the greatest of all time on that surface. I will be excited to play. It will be a tough one, but it will be a fun one.”
