Just a day after Maria Sharapova announced she was parting ways with longtime coach Thomas Hogstedt — and a flood of coaching suggestions — a new coach is named.
Sharapova has surprisingly selected Jimmy Connors as her next guru, a guy who will be a very different voice to Hogstedt. Sharapova’s official website alerted the world to the new coaching hookup. Connors’ other notable coaching stint was working with Andy Roddick.
Sharapova’s statement on her official website: “I am happy to announce that Jimmy Connors will be my new coach. I have known Jimmy for many years and we briefly worked together in 2008 just before the Australian Open. I am really excited about our new partnership and looking forward to the upcoming tournaments.”
